A fast paced game took place Thursday night, with its fair share of headlines. The Senators took a point, ultimately falling in the shootout.

GAME RECAP:

The 1st period got off to a quick start for OTT as Mark Stone had a tip-in goal on Curtis Lazar’s goal. Cody Ceci recorded the 2nd assist as a youth movement for the Senators made an impact all night. Coming back later was Chicago with goals from Johnathan Toews and Kris Versteeg. Versteeg’s goal came on a play which saw him beat Erik Karlsson cleanly and had a nice finish.

Ottawa tied the game in the 2nd on a goal from Clarke MacArthur. MacArthur has been hot of late and leads the Senators in goals after 2 against Columbus and another one tonight. 2 – 2 was the score after 2 despite two late Ottawa penalties.

Bobby Ryan brought Ottawa the lead early on in the 3rd. 30 seconds in to be precise, Bobby was given the puck in the slot and beat Scott Darling in a game where he was solid. Chicago bounced back on two goals from Johnathan Toews and Marian Hossa. Hossa’s came as a monumental goal, as he reached the 1000 point plateau. Just the 80th player to do so is Hossa.

4 – 3 Blackhawks with <5 to go, when Mika Zibanejad stepped up and ripped one home past Mr. Darling. Zibanejad’s goal is his first goal and point of the year, breaking a scoreless drought for him.

Overtime was needed, and solved nothing. A late penalty put Ottawa on the hot seat, but OTT was able to kill it off. In the shootout, the Senators could not solve Scott Darling. Alex Chiasson’s attempt was similar to what we’ve seen in the past and Kyle Turris’ and Bobby Ryan’s were stopped. In the 3rd round it was Patrick Sharp who beat Craig Anderson, giving Chicago the W.

GAME NOTES:

  • Congratulations to Marian Hossa on point 1000
  • Ottawa’s “kid line” Hoffman – Lazar – Stone was an impact, having many great 1st period shifts.
  • Mika Zibanejad scored, but was quiet most of the night. Now that he’s got the point/goal off his back, look for him to step up.
  • Bobby Ryan was dominant at points and had a solid overall game
  • Clarke MacArthur has to be the best winger on this team. He’s used in all situations and had another dominant night with his speed up front.
  • Mike Hoffman will not be scratched again

The Senators travel to Boston on Saturday to face a strong Bruins team. The Bruins are off to a rocky start, but look for them to give the Senators quite a fight.
