Assume for a second that Jason Spezza‘s trade request is granted and the current Ottawa Senators captain becomes the second one in a matter of a year to leave town.

Even if Bryan Murray doesn’t find a deal he likes and Spezza comes back, can he really still sport the “C” on his jersey?  I wouldn’t think so, especially given the fact that one of the reasons Spezza is asking out of town is the pressure he feels and the fact that he is the primary scapegoat when the team loses.

That being said, the Senators will be looking for their third captain in 3 years.  Assuming Mark Messier isn’t coming out of retirement to lead the team and Jonathan Toews won’t be on the Senators, who should be named the next captain?  Here are the possibilities:

Chris Phillips has a horrible +-, hardly plays so his leadership will be shown by making good beer, not what we want
erik karlsson is too much of an enigma, like spezza, we’ll love him when he’s playing well, hate him when he sucks, we don’t need to drive out another star
Clarke might not stay, same with Ryan
If anyone should be captain they should play a lot, play responsibly (+-), be able to handle negative criticism (coyotes bullshit) lead by example, score big goals
Kyle Turris ticks all the boxes and this guy was given an “A” over Karlsson when Spezza was out injured
I think I know the next captain

    Turris, hands down.
