Ottawa Senators right winger Colin Greening has signed a three year contract extension, on top of the one year he still has on his deal means he is under contract for 4 more seasons.

The financial terms of the deal carry an average annual value & cap hit of $2.65M, tripling the  $816.000 he will make this season.

While many people have tried to move him up the Senators depth chart into a top 6 role, I don’t think that is where he fits.  He is big, strong and fast, but he doesn’t have the consistent finishing ability to be a top 6 forward on a team that hopes to compete. He has played in that role in the past, but that was more out of necessity than fit.

Greening is 27 years old now, so he is pretty much at his ceiling in terms of potential.  He will be a very good third line forward, but the players currently in the fold and some of the prospects that should be through in the next couple of years have more offensive upside.

I don’t mind the term, as the deal takes him until he is 31, and he has proven to be pretty durable in his tenure.  I just fear the dollar value that will comes with it is too much for the role he will play.
