After the frenzy of the draft and free agency, things have definitely slowed down as the NHL takes as close to a holiday as it ever does.  However, there is still some news out there:

  • The Winnipeg Jets appear to have lost RFA centre Alexander Burmistrov to Ak-Bars of the KHL.  The 21 year old expressed frustration at the system Jets coach Claude Noel implemented and he bailed on his team.  The Jets will retain his rights should he decide to return, which apparently might not be until Noel is no longer behind the bench.
  • The Hockey Hall of Fame will be naming its inductess later today. There are a lot of notable candidates, many of whom will be left out because of the archaic voting process.
  • From the “I won’t believe it till I see it” department, the lease has finally been signed in Phoenix Glendale where the soon to be branded Arizona Coyotes will remain for at least 5 years.  That guaranteed time for the club to remain seems shorter than the ownership drama that preceded it.
  • For Joe Corvo, I guess the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t, because after 3 separate stints in Carolina, the 36 year old defenseman returned to Ottawa for a 1-year, $900,000 contract.
