Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks has been acquired by the Ottawa Senators for Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen and a first round pick.

Ryan was the 2nd overall pick in 2005 behind Sidney Crosby, is a 4 time 30 goal scorer who has two years left on his contract and is a legitimate first line winger.  He didn’t light the league on fire early on in his career, but he developed into  He comes in after being on the market, off the market and back on the market again, and didn’t fit in the Ducks future with the money that they committed to Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

The news came about 5 hours after it was confirmed that Daniel Alfredsson had indeed left to pursue a Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings on a 1 year contract that will pay him $3.5M with the potential for bonuses of another $2M.

The Senators also added former Leafs UFA Clarke MacArthur, who is a solid potential 20 goal scorer in his own right.  He signed a 2 year, $6.5M contract.

Silverberg had a solid rookie campaign and Noesen was a solid prospect, but adding a player of Ryan’s calibre was worth the price that the Senators paid in this trade.  I am still not sold on how it makes up for Alfredsson’s departure.
