Puck Drop: Senators Look To The Past With New Heritage Jersey

facebooktwitterreddit

The Ottawa Senators officially revealed (Buffalo’s HSBC arena gaffe notwithstanding) their long awaited Heritage Jersey to a few thousand fans at Scotiabank Place this morning, and from all of the comments I overheard, there was a lot to like.  The full Senators roster was decked out in the new sweaters, led by the Captain, Daniel Alfredsson and his alternates, Chris Phillips and Jason Spezza.

The Senators then held an open practice, one that focused on special teams, which will need to become a stronger part of the Senators game if they are to improve in the standings this season.

The practice still included the likes of Mark Borowiecki, David Rundblad, Kaspars Daugavins and other hopefuls still on the roster, which still needs to be cut down to 23 by next Wednesday.

NOTES ABOUT THE NEW HERITAGE JERSEY

  • The jersey was designed by Jacob Barette in consultation with local hockey historian and author Paul Kitchen
  • The “O” logo was used on many Ottawa jerseys prior to the Original Senators move to St. Louis in 1934
  • The Barber Poles also harken back to a variety of styles used by the Original Senators.  This uniform only uses three stripes of each colour as a tribute to those uniforms – the chest, arms and socks.
  • The Shoulder crest is a tribute to the last Stanley Cup champs in Ottawa, the 1926-27 Senators, whose jerseys the next season had a crest signifying them as champions, with a similar look.
  • The “off-white” or “Antique White” colour signifies the faded white of the old Ottawa jerseys that are still in existence.
  • The collar, with the laces is a modern touch to an old-looking jersey
