Catch of the Day: Brad Richards Signs in New York

facebooktwitterreddit

Who would have thought that the New York Rangers would land the biggest fish in the Free Agent pond?  Glen Sather opened his wallet again (at least  his owner’s wallet), but this time it might actually work out for the Blueshirts.  Unlike past free agent busts, they have nabbed a top 10 scorer and former Conn Smythe trophy winner, who at 31 is just entering his prime.

If the rumoured contract of 9 years, $58 million (some reports have it at $60 million) is true, it is actually not a terrible deal.  It takes him to age 40, and following the trend that was set by Christian Ehrhoff and the Sabres, it is front loaded  and according to Rogers Sportsnet he will make $50 over the first 5 years of the deal.  If this is true it means that Richards becomes the 4th player set to earn $10 million for the upcoming season (joining Lecavalier, Bryzgalov and Ehrhoff).

The move to New York reunites Richards with his former coach in Tampa, John Tortorella, which was considered to be a major factor in Richards choosing the Rangers over some other more lucrative offers.
