2013 Women’s World Championships Coming Back To Ottawa

The game of Women’s hockey has come a long way since 1990 when the first ever World Women’s Hockey Championships was held at the Civic Centre in Ottawa.  The talk of that tournament was Team Canada’s awful pink uniforms.  Canada won the gold medal that tournament and in 2013 the tournament will return to the Nation’s Capital, Hockey Canada and the Ottawa Senators announced today.

Ottawa’s bid beat out applications from Kamloops, BC and St. John’s, NFLD for the right to host the event that will take place in April 2013, which happens to be right around NHL playoff time.

The tournament consists of 8 teams, but has taken some criticism as being essentiallya two-team event.  Canada has faced the US in every final game since the tournament’s inception in 1990.  Canada won the first 8 tournaments.  However, the USA has won the last three World Championships, and and 4 of the last 5.  Team Canada will attempt to end the streak in 2012 in Burlington, Vermont before returning home hopefully to defend the title in Ottawa.
