Canucks Avoid Letdown, Shut Out Fisher And The Preds

The Vancouver Canucks were back in action less than 48 hours after finally dispatching the Chicago Blackhawks,  facing their round 2 opponent, the Nashville Predators.  In what is expected to be a defensive, low scoring series, goaltending was in the spotlight.  The netminders lived up to the hype, as Pekka Rinne was only beaten once on 30 shots, while the less busy Roberto Luongo was perfect on 20 shots, including a Mike Fisher breakaway in the third period.  Deadline acquisition Chris Higgins was the only marksman from either team to find the back of the net.

Round 2 kicks off in 2 other fronts tonight, with Washington hosting Tampa Bay and San Jose hosting Detroit.  This will be a new challenge for the Lightning, who were the beneficiaries of injuries that kept Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin out of the Pittsburgh lineup.  They will not be so lucky as all hands will be on Washington’s deck, save for Mike Knuble, who is still targeting a return later in the series.  Detroit will be getting two key pieces back, as Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen are good to go after missing time against Phoenix.
