Another One Bites The Dust…Rangers Eliminated

facebooktwitterreddit

The Washington Capitals became the second team to move into the second round Saturday night as they completed the series win at home, defeating the New York Rangers 3-1.  The Caps took the series in 5 games.  Alexander Ovechkin scored the winner, and added an assist in the win.

Meanwhile, two other teams on the brink of elimination rode early starts to chase starting goalies and convincing wins in their respective series’.  The Tampa Bay Lightning chased Marc-Andre Fleury for the first time en route to an 8-2 victory over the Penguins, to extend the series to a 6th game.  Steven Stamkos finally made his mark with a pair of goals in the blowout.  Meanwhile, in the late game, the Los Angeles Kings scored on 75% of their shots against Anttii Niemi in the first 9 minutes before he got the hook, allowing 3 goals on 4 shots.  The Kings didn’t need any more offense as Jonathan Quick made 51 saves for the 3-1 victory over the Sharks, to also force a 6th game back at the Staples Centre.

Perhaps the best game of the day was also the closest.  The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens waged an epic battle that went into double overtime tied at 1 goal apeice, when finally Nathan Horton slipped one past Carey Price to give the Bruins a 3-2 series lead heading back to Montreal.  Price and Tim Thomas combined to make 93 saves, career playoff highs for both goalies.

Here, from  NHL.com is a wrap-up of the four games on yesterday’s schedule:

We are now at the point in the opening round where every game is an elimination game for one team in the series.Today, two home teams have a chance to pull upsets over the higher ranked seeds.  Philadelphia goes to Buffalo to try to extend their season for another game, while Nashville hosts the Ducks to try to end their season.  The nightcap sees Vancouver attempt to stop the bleeding and answer many doubters as they try to finally finish off the Blackhawks.  A Vancouver loss will have Cancuck fans pushing the panic button big time.
